When someone searches "bakery near me" or "interior designer in Vaishali Nagar", Google shows a map with three businesses before any normal results. Getting into that "local pack" is often the fastest way for a local business to win new customers.
Here is the checklist we follow.
Step 1: Complete your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most important local ranking factor you control.
- Primary category: choose the most specific one that describes your main service.
- Secondary categories: add others that genuinely apply.
- Services and products: list them with short descriptions and prices where possible.
- Hours: keep them accurate, including holidays.
- Photos: add real photos of your premises, team and work — and keep adding them.
- Description: explain what you do, who you serve and where, in natural language.
- Posts: share offers, updates and new work regularly.
Step 2: Keep your NAP consistent
NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone number. It should be exactly the same on your website, Google profile, Facebook page, directories like Justdial and IndiaMART, and anywhere else you are listed. Inconsistent details confuse Google and customers alike.
Step 3: Build a steady stream of genuine reviews
Reviews influence both rankings and whether people choose you.
- Ask every happy customer, ideally right after a good experience.
- Make it easy with a short link or QR code.
- Reply to every review — thank positive ones, respond calmly and helpfully to negative ones.
- Never buy fake reviews; Google removes them and can suspend profiles.
Step 4: Create strong location and service pages
Your website should support your Google profile:
- A clear contact page with your address, map and phone number.
- Service pages that mention the areas you serve, naturally.
- If you serve several distinct areas, a genuinely useful page for each — not copies with the city name swapped.
Step 5: Get local citations and links
Citations are mentions of your business on other sites. Focus on quality:
- Major directories and maps (Google, Bing, Apple Maps)
- Trusted Indian directories relevant to your industry
- Local associations, chambers and community sites
- Suppliers and partners who can link to you
Step 6: Make your website fast and mobile-friendly
Most local searches happen on phones, often on the move. A slow or clumsy mobile site loses those customers immediately. Keep pages light, put click-to-call and WhatsApp buttons in easy reach, and show your location clearly.
Step 7: Track the right numbers
In your Google Business Profile insights, watch:
- Calls and direction requests
- Website clicks
- Searches that found you
Pair this with Search Console data for your website. Expect gradual improvement over a few months rather than overnight jumps.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a virtual office address you don’t actually operate from
- Stuffing keywords into your business name
- Creating multiple profiles for the same location
- Ignoring reviews and questions on your profile
