Shopify and WooCommerce are two of the most popular ways to build an online store. Both can run a successful business — but they suit different owners. Here is an honest comparison to help you decide.
The short answer
- Choose Shopify if you want the simplest setup, minimal maintenance and you are comfortable with monthly fees.
- Choose WooCommerce if you want full control, no platform fees, or you already run a WordPress website.
What each one is
Shopify is a hosted platform. You pay a monthly subscription and Shopify handles hosting, security, updates and uptime. You manage products and orders from a clean dashboard.
WooCommerce is a free plugin that turns a WordPress website into a store. You arrange your own hosting and are responsible for updates, backups and security — or hire someone to handle them.
Comparison at a glance
| Shopify | WooCommerce | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | Low | Medium |
| Ongoing maintenance | Handled by Shopify | Your responsibility |
| Platform fee | Monthly subscription | None (plugin is free) |
| Hosting | Included | Paid separately |
| Flexibility | High, within Shopify’s rules | Very high, full code access |
| Apps/plugins | Large app store, often paid monthly | Huge plugin ecosystem, many one-time or free |
| Data ownership | Exportable, hosted by Shopify | Fully on your own server |
| Best for | D2C brands, fast launches | Content-rich sites, custom needs, cost control |
Costs: look beyond the headline
Shopify: subscription plan + paid apps + premium theme (optional) + payment processing charges. Monthly costs grow as you add apps.
WooCommerce: good hosting + premium plugins/theme (optional) + maintenance time or a maintenance plan. There is no per-sale platform fee from WooCommerce itself.
For a small catalogue, costs are often similar over a year. Differences show up as you scale and add features.
Ease of use
Shopify is easier for non-technical owners on day one. WooCommerce has a steeper learning curve but feels familiar if you already use WordPress.
Payments in India
Both support popular Indian gateways such as Razorpay, PhonePe and Cashfree, plus Cash on Delivery. Check that your preferred gateway and any COD rules work smoothly on your chosen platform before you commit.
SEO and content
Both can rank well when set up properly. WooCommerce benefits from WordPress’s strength as a content platform — useful if you plan a lot of blogging. Shopify covers the SEO essentials well and is fast by default.
Customisation
Shopify allows deep design changes through themes and Liquid code, within its structure. WooCommerce lets developers change almost anything, which is valuable for unusual pricing, B2B rules or complex product builders.
Scaling
Shopify scales without you thinking about servers. WooCommerce scales well too, but needs stronger hosting, caching and periodic optimisation as traffic and catalogue grow.
Our recommendation
- New D2C brand, small team, want to launch quickly: Shopify.
- Existing WordPress site, lots of content, custom rules, want to avoid monthly fees: WooCommerce.
- Very complex requirements: consider a custom build.
