How Much Does a Website Cost in India? A Realistic Breakdown

"How much will my website cost?" is the first question almost every business owner asks — and the honest answer is "it depends". Quotes for what sounds like the same website can range from a few thousand rupees to several lakhs. This guide explains why, so you can set a sensible budget and compare quotes on equal terms.

The five things that decide the price

1. The type of website

  • Starter / brochure site (1–5 pages): who you are, what you do, how to contact you.
  • Business website (6–15 pages): detailed service pages, blog, lead forms, basic SEO.
  • E-commerce store: products, cart, payments, shipping, order management.
  • Custom web application: portals, booking systems, dashboards, CRMs — built around your workflow.

Each step up adds planning, design and development time.

2. Design: template or custom

A customised template is quicker and cheaper. A fully custom design — planned around your brand, customers and content — takes longer but usually converts better and stands out from competitors using the same theme.

3. Features and integrations

Every feature adds work: payment gateways, WhatsApp integration, booking calendars, multi-language support, member logins, CRM or Tally integration, calculators, animations. List what you truly need at launch and what can wait.

4. Content

Someone has to write the text and supply the photos. If you provide ready content, costs go down. If the agency writes copy, plans SEO keywords or arranges photography, budget for it.

5. Who builds it

Freelancers, small studios and larger agencies price differently. What matters most is whether the quote includes everything you need — design, development, testing, SEO basics, training and support.

Costs people forget

  • Domain name: renewed yearly.
  • Hosting: shared hosting is affordable; busy stores and apps need more.
  • SSL certificate: often free through your host.
  • Business email: sometimes included with hosting.
  • Paid plugins, themes or apps: some have yearly licences.
  • Maintenance: updates, backups and security monitoring.
  • Marketing: a website doesn’t bring visitors on its own — SEO or ads usually follow.

How to compare quotes fairly

Ask every company for a written quote that lists:

  1. Number of pages and their purpose
  2. Design approach (template or custom)
  3. Every feature and integration
  4. Who provides content
  5. Number of revision rounds
  6. Timeline and payment milestones
  7. What support is included after launch
  8. Who owns the domain, hosting and code

A cheaper quote that leaves out half of this list is not actually cheaper.

Red flags

  • A price without a written scope
  • "Unlimited revisions" with no timeline
  • Accounts registered in the agency’s name instead of yours
  • No portfolio of live websites you can open
