For local businesses, the Google Business Profile (GBP) is often more visible than the website itself. It is what people see in Google Maps and in the map box at the top of local searches. A well-kept profile can bring a steady flow of calls, direction requests and website visits — for free.
Step 1: Claim and verify your profile
Search for your business name on Google. If a profile exists, claim it; if not, create one at business.google.com. Google will ask you to verify — usually by video, phone or postcard. Complete verification before spending time on the rest.
Step 2: Choose the right categories
Your primary category has a big influence on which searches you appear for. Pick the most specific one that describes your main service — for example "Website designer" rather than just "Consultant". Add secondary categories only if they genuinely apply.
Step 3: Fill in every field
- Business name: exactly as it appears on your signboard — no extra keywords.
- Address or service area: use your real address; service businesses can hide it and list areas instead.
- Phone and website: use a number that is answered during business hours.
- Hours: including holidays and special hours.
- Services or products: list each with a short description and price where possible.
- Description: explain what you do, who you serve and where, in natural language.
- Attributes: such as "Online appointments" or "Wheelchair accessible".
Step 4: Add real photos — regularly
Upload photos of your premises (inside and outside), team, work and products. Businesses that keep adding fresh photos tend to look more active and trustworthy. Avoid stock images.
Step 5: Build a habit of reviews
Reviews influence both ranking and the customer’s decision.
- Ask every satisfied customer, ideally right after a good experience.
- Share a short review link by WhatsApp or print it as a QR code at the counter.
- Reply to every review — thank people, and answer criticism calmly and helpfully.
- Never buy reviews or post fake ones; Google removes them and may suspend profiles.
Step 6: Use Posts and Q&A
Google Posts let you share offers, events and updates directly on your profile. Post at least a few times a month. Add common questions and answers yourself in the Q&A section so customers see accurate information.
Step 7: Keep information consistent everywhere
Your name, address and phone number should match exactly across your website, Google profile, Facebook, Justdial, IndiaMART and other directories. Inconsistent details confuse both Google and customers.
Step 8: Connect it to a strong website
Link your profile to the most relevant page — often your homepage or a location page. Make sure that page loads fast on mobile, shows your address and has click-to-call and WhatsApp buttons.
Step 9: Track results
The profile’s performance section shows searches, calls, direction requests and website clicks. Review it monthly and note what changed after each improvement.
Common mistakes
- Keyword-stuffed business names
- Using a virtual office you don’t actually work from
- Duplicate profiles for the same location
- Ignoring reviews and questions for months
